On 23 Sep 2017, Cupcakes of Hope (ZAF) built a tower of sweet treats measuring 10.77 m (35 ft 4 in) in height in Vereeniging, Gauteng Province, South Africa.

Most people grilling/barbecuing simultaneously

Yuca Expoeventos (MEX) brought together 394 barbecuers to do their stuff on the Plaza de la Mexicanidad in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, on 19 Aug 2017.

Most flautas served in eight hours

Financial institution BBVA Bancomer (MEX) served 12,000 flautas (rolled tacos) on 9 Oct 2017 in Mexico City, Mexico. They required 396 kg (873 lb) of tortillas, 495 kg (1,091 lb) of beef, 165 kg (363 lb) of panela cheese, 429 kg (945 lb) of guacamole and 200 litres (52.8 US gal) of cream.

Largest serving of plov

On 8 Sep 2017, Uzbek entertainment TV channel Milliy TV cooked up a serving of plov weighing 7,360 kg (16,226 lb) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Plov is a traditional rice-and-meat dish, often served from a cauldron known as a kazan.

Most blueberries stuffed in the mouth in one minute

Dinesh Shivnath Upadhyaya (IND) crammed 86 blueberries in his mouth in 60 sec on 16 Jan 2018 in Mumbai, India. Dinesh is the holder of multiple GWR food-related titles – this was the fourth time he had broken this particular record.

Most juice extracted from grapes by treading in one minute

Martina Servaty (DEU) squeezed out 12.76 litres (3.37 US gal) of juice by treading grapes in 60 sec live on Gordon Ramsay’s The F Word in Los Angeles, California, USA, on 26 Jul 2017.

Largest candy mosaic

On 16 Apr 2017, CYE-Ningbo Cultural Square Development (CHN) unveiled a candy mosaic measuring 160.22 m2 (1,724 sq ft) in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China. The image, which was created by 60 people, used almost 300,000 lollipops and took 11 hr to complete.

Most sausages produced in a minute

On 3 Apr 2017, Barry John Crowe (IRL) made 78 sausages in 60 sec on the set of RTÉ’s Big Week on the Farm in Cavan, Ireland. World champion butcher Barry has been making sausages since the age of 13. Each one he produced had to be at least 4 in (10.16 cm) long. He smashed the previous record of 60, set in 2016.

Drink a bottle of ketchup

On 7 Sep 2017, Dinesh Shivnath Upadhyaya (IND) downed a 500-g (17.6-oz) bottle of ketchup in 25.37 sec in Mumbai, India. The gastronomic guzzler beat the previous best by more than 4 sec.

Peel and eat a grapefruit

On 16 Mar 2017, multi-record holder Dinesh peeled and ate a grapefruit in 14.22 sec in Mumbai, India.

Eat 500 g of mozzarella

On 12 Apr 2016, Ashrita Furman (USA) ate half a kilo (1 lb 1 oz) of cheese in New York City, USA, in 1 min 34.44 sec.

Fastest time to eat three pickled eggs

On 7 Dec 2017, Kevin “L.A. Beast” Strahle (USA) wolfed down three pickled eggs in just 21.09 sec in Ridgewood, New Jersey, USA. Kevin is a competitive eater who thinks nothing of knocking back 12 raw eggs in a single serving, drinking a gallon of honey while covered in bees or eating 10 cacti. In 2017, he devoured one GWR title after another .

On 12 May 2017, Kevin gobbled up the most powdered doughnuts in three minutes – nine. He could not lick his lips at any time during the attempt.

On 12 May 2017, Kevin stopped by the GWR office in New York City, USA, and set the fastest time to drink a bottle of maple syrup – 10.84 sec.

Kevin battled to avoid the dreaded “brain freeze” while achieving the most ice lollies (popsicles) eaten in one minute – six – on 7 Dec 2017.

Eat a 12-in pizza

Kelvin Medina (PHL) put away a pizza in 23.62 sec in Taguig, Metro Manila, Philippines, on 12 Apr 2015.

André Ortolf (DEU) ate 500 g (17.6 oz) of cranberry sauce in 42.94 sec in Augsburg, Germany, on 19 Aug 2016.

Jam-filled biscuit

Frances Quinn – winner of the 2013 Great British Bake Off TV show – and Hambleton Bakery (both UK) designed and baked a giant jam-filled biscuit weighing 26.76 kg (58 lb 15 oz). The “Grand Slammy Dodger”, as it was named, was sculpted into the shape of a tennis racket to celebrate the 2017 Wimbledon Championships. Unveiled on 14 Jul 2017, it weighed about the same as a Dalmatian dog.

Bread dumpling

A 170-lb (77.1-kg) dumpling was prepared by Andrea, Filippo and Matteo Bettega, Andrea Nascimbene, Andrea Andrighetti in an event organized by Gruppo G.A.R.I. (all ITA) in Imer, Trento, Italy, on 10 Jun 2017. The traditional Italian canederlo or knödel contained flour, parsley, speck, chives and sage.

Ice-cream-scoop pyramid

A total of 5,435 scoops of ice-cream were piled into a 23-layer pyramid by Diplom-Is (NOR) in Strömstad, Sweden, on 28 Jan 2017. The final structure weighed 500 kg (1,102 lb) and measured 1.1 m (3 ft 7 in) tall.

Dulce de leche candy

A cajeta de Sayula weighing 1,615.5 kg (3,561 lb 9 oz) was made by Cajeteros de Sayula (MEX) in Jalisco, Mexico, on 28 Feb 2017. This dish, a regional variation on dulce de leche (“sweet milk”), was made from milk, sugar, vanilla and rice flour, which was poured into a wooden case and cooked with a blowtorch.

Chili con carne

A rhinoceros-sized serving of chili con carne weighing 4,800 lb (2,177 kg) was prepared by the Spirit of Texas Festival in College Station, Texas, USA, on 4 Mar 2017.

Chocolate rabbit

The largest rabbit made of chocolate weighed 4,245.5 kg (9,359 lb 11 oz) – more than 4,000 times heavier than the average pet bunny. It was sculpted by Equipe da Casa do Chocolate at Shopping Uberaba in Minas Gerais, Brazil, on 25 Feb 2017. The giraffe-sized confection stood 4.52 m (14 ft 9.9 in) tall and contained an estimated 21.2 million calories.

Cachupa stew

The national dish of Cape Verde in West Africa, cachupa stew typically comprises meats cooked with corn, sweet potato, beans and cabbage. On 9 Jul 2017, 6,360 kg (14,021 lb) of it – equivalent in weight to a large African elephant – was cooked by Cavibel SA and Grupo Mirage (both CPV) in the country’s capital, Praia. No elephants were involved: the meats used were pork and chicken.

Largest chocolate truffle

On 21 Apr 2017, Sweet Shop USA of Mount Pleasant, Texas, produced a giant chocolate truffle weighing 1,074.33 kg (2,368 lb 8 oz). The “Milk Swiss Mint Truffle” – about 5.5 million calories – was equivalent in weight to 12 adult men!

The longest kebab – of meat and vegetables – was skewered by staff of ArcelorMittal in Newcastle, South Africa, on 17 Oct 2008 and measured 2.04 km (1.26 mi).

The longest sushi roll measured 2.84 km (1.76 mi) and was made by 400 volunteers for the Tamana Otawara Festival in Kumamoto, Japan, on 20 Nov 2016.

Longest pizza

A mega-sized margherita pizza measuring 1.2 mi (1.93 km) in length was made by Pizzaovens.com, Venice Bakery, Orlando Foods, AT-PAC, Sysco, TFX NonStick!, Capstone Scaffold Services, Scaffold Works, SoCalGas, Tony Gemignani, Giulio Adriani, John Arena (all USA) and Italforni (ITA) in Fontana, California, USA, on 10 Jun 2017. It took eight hours to cook the pizza: the raw dough and its toppings were passed through three industrial ovens using a conveyor belt.

MOST EXPENSIVE...

Hot dog

The “Juuni Ban” hot dog at Tokyo Dog in Seattle, Washington, USA, sells for $169 (£101.69), as verified on 23 Feb 2014. For this, you get smoked-cheese bratwurst, butter-teriyaki-grilled onions, maitake mushrooms, wagyu beef, foie gras, shaved black truffles and caviar.

Slice of wedding cake

A box containing a piece of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s 1937 wedding cake was sold at Sotheby’s in New York, USA, on 27 Feb 1998 for $29,900 (£18,152) to Benjamin and Amanda Yin of San Francisco, USA. When asked if they would be exhibiting the cake, the buyers replied, “We’re sure not going to eat it! It represents the epitome of a great romance.”

Sandwich

The “Quintessential Grilled Cheese” sells for $214 (£132.64) at Serendipity 3 in New York, USA. The cheese used in the toastie is made from the milk of the Podolico cow, which grazes in southern Italy on aromatic plants such as fennel, liquorice, juniper, bay laurel and wild strawberries. Only around 25,000 such cows exist.

Mangoes

The most expensive mangoes in the world cost AUS$2,562.50 (£888; $1,284) each! They were purchased by Sam Coco (AUS) when he bought a tray of 16 Top End mangoes at the Brisbane Produce Markets Charity Auction in Australia for AUS$41,000 (£14,212; $20,544) on 12 Oct 2001. The mangoes were donated to Brisbane’s Mater Children’s Hospital.

Hamburger

Since 2 Jul 2011, the most that you can spend on a commercially available hamburger – as listed on a restaurant menu – is $5,000 (£3,115.86), for the burger served at Juicys Outlaw Grill in Corvallis, Oregon, USA. The hamburger weighs 777 lb (352.44 kg) and is available for ordering with 48 hours’ notice for preparation time.
